GENDER IDENTITY & QUESTIONING

In today’s culture it is becoming increasingly popular, almost trendy, among adolescents to make bold and public statements about their sexuality.  Oftentimes, it has less to do with the true sexual orientation of the individual and more to do with things going on inside a young person’s mind and emotions.  Statements about ones sexuality which go against the norm of society can sometimes be a way of acting out, rebelling against authority, or seeking attention. It may also be a way of letting others know they are confused, hurt or frustrated or as a way of feeling like they belong to a certain group.  And unfortunately, sexual abuse experiences may also contribute to sexual matters among adolescents.

Current statistics regarding sexual abuse (actual figures may be higher):

–  1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 18

–  1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 18

These statistics are astounding and cannot be overlooked when investigating  teen sexuality matters and questioning.  Counseling empowers teens to make sense of their feelings and is the first step in enabling a young person to understand matters of this nature.
